Who’s your clubs next captain?

11th December 2017
Liam O'Grady

Adelaide:

Despite what people in the media says Taylor Walker has been voted best captain in the AFL two years in a row so it would be very unlikely he would be replaced.

If you asked a few years ago who would be the next captain after Dangerfield (was the likely replacement to Van Berlo before Tex was appointed) people would have said Brad Crouch but after 2017 the attention has switched to his younger brother Matt Crouch not only is he looked as a future captain also a Brownlow medallist and a premier midfielder of the AFL.

Adelaide’s next captain: Matt Crouch

Brisbane:

Another two-parter I wouldn’t be surprised if Zorko joins Beams as co-captains in 2018 after proving he is Brisbane best player since Jonathan Brown.

But I said before he was even drafted that Huge McCluggage would be a future captain and my option still hasn’t changed he just has that superstar look about him and it is looking likely he will resign with the Lions early to mid next year.

Another candidate would be Jarrod Berry

Brisbane’s next captain: Huge McCluggage

Carlton:

Patrick Cripps has been looked at as the next Carlton captain since he joined the Blues. Like Jack Ziebell was always looked at as the next North captain. If not next year 2019 would be the year Cripps takes his place as the captain of the next generation of Carlton.

A player that is coming up is Charlie Curnow but Cripps looks the most likely.

Carlton’s next captain: Patrick Cripps

Collingwood:

If Pendlebury steps down in the next as soon as next season the likely successor would be Steel Sidebottom. I think Steel has missed his chance and the next captain is down to two former GWS player Taylor Adams or Adam Treloar both look to be ready to take over the reign as the Pies skipper.

Collingwood’s next captain: Taylor Adams

Essendon:

Essendon’s next captain will mirror Fremantle’s as it is clear who it would be but will not be captain for long. Zach Merrett is already a B&F winner and an All Australian and has already captained the Bombers is the most likely candidate to take over from Heppell. Another All Australian and B&F winner is Joe Daniher but Merrett looks more likely at this stage.

Essendon’s next captain: Zach Merrett

Fremantle:

Just like Essendon the next Fremantle captain is close in age to the current captain and it is likely Fyfe will be captain until 2022 meaning he would be 30 if he takes over and that is Lachie Neale. I previously had Lachie Weller as a future captain until he got traded to the Suns at the end of last season. Connor Blakely is looking to be a future leader art the Dockers and maybe if Neale is too old in 2023 Blakely might take over the reigns.

A long shot has he has not played a game yet but number 2 draft pick Andrew Brayshaw looks like a future captain. No pressure on the young kid.

Fremantle’s next captain: Lachie Neale

Geelong:

Selwood should become Geelong’s longest serving captain in 2018 and at only 28 does not look like handing the captaincy over anytime soon. Mitch Duncan is the likely player to captain the Cat’s in saying that with Geelong bringing in Danger and Ablett in the last couple of years has stopped Duncan becoming Geelong’s second best midfielder.

Geelong’s next captain: Mitch Duncan

Gold Coast:

May will continue captaining the Suns after 2018 the same can not be said about Tom Lynch. Lynch is the face of the football club and if he leaves witch is 60/40 at this point. If Lynch leaves it is likely Steven May will continue solo but there are a few players that are next in line to captain the Suns.

David Swallow might come in if Lynch leaves but looking younger we have Touk Miller has already stated how he wants to captain the club and he is the mostly likely to. Jake Martin and Ben Ainsworth could both come into consideration and Lachie Weller who joined at the end of 2017 who I had down as a future captain of Fremantle will join the leadership at the Suns maybe right away

Gold Coast’s next captain: Touk Miller

Greater Western Sydney:

You can name half of the GWS best 22 to find their next captain but it will be another three of four season before Callan Ward or Phil Davis gives up the captaincy. Stephen Coniglio is the vice captain and would be 26/27 by the time he becomes captain. Dylan Shiel could also be in consideration. Josh Kelly would be likely but I think more people believe he will leave after his 2019 contract ends to move back home to Victoria and GWS do not want a Chris Judd situation happening. Jeremy Cameron is also a believe captain of the Giants

Greater Western Sydney’s next captain: Stephen Coniglio & Dylan Shiel

Hawthorn:

I would not be surprised if Roughead is not captain in 2018 with the Hawks no longer in the premiership window and just went down with a knee Injury. Tom Mitchell is ahead of Jeager O’Meara to captain the Hawks. Hawthorn dose not have a obvious captain but Mitchell is ahead of the pack. I am not a fan of players who played for one club captain another.

Ryan Burton is placed to captain further down the line just not ready yet.

Hawthorn’s next captain: Tom Mitchell

Melbourne:

Jack Viney would have been my pick until he was placed as the captain earlier this season. Christian Petracca could be looked at as the next captain. Jessie Hogan could be a long shot but I feel he would be a fantastic captain. But with Viney only being 23 Melbourne’s next captain might still be in primary School.

Melbourne’s next captain: Jessie Hogan

North Melbourne:

I can only see one player that could captain the Roos and he hasn’t played a game yet Luke Davies-Uniacke is the only player I can see take over from Ziebell. A long shot would be Ben Brown but he is too close in age with Ziebell

North Melbourne’s next captain: Luke Davies-Uniacke

Port Adelaide:

There are four captain changes that are obvious Cripps to captain Carlton is one and Wines to take over from Travis Boak is another. Wines could take over as early as 2018 but if dose not expect Wines to captain Port before the 2020s start

Port Adelaide’s next captain: Ollie Wines

Richmond:

Trent Cotchins looks set to be replaced at the end of 2016 but now he is a Brownlow medallist and a premiership captain so it looks likely he will remain captain well into his 30s so at a first glance there is not many player would could replace him at the moment. Dion Prestia could be the most likely to take over but if you look further down the line Jack Graham captained SA in the under 18s combined in 2016 and has shown he can stand up on the biggest stage with his three goals and 16 touches in the 2017 Grand Final shows that he can stand up.

Richmond’s next captain: Dion Prestia

St Kilda:

With Jarryd Geary in his 2nd year as captain in 2018 but he will also be turning 30 so the Saints will be looking for a long serving captain Dylan Roberton 27 in 2018 and Seb Ross 25 in 2018 are the next likely candidates for the captaincy Josh Bruce was added to the leadership group in 2017 but after a disappointing 2017 he chances might be slipping.

St Kilda’s next captain: Seb Ross

Sydney:

Josh Kennedy being appointed captain was the best decision that no one saw coming he is one of the best players in the AFL and is one of the best captains. Sydney’s list of future captains like a exclusive club where they have the next 40 member’s already lined up. It is not hard to see who is next. Dan Hannebery is the likely successor to Kennedy and if they want to go back to their classic co-captains would help Luke Parker become captain sooner as well. Isaac Heeney and Callum Mills can both also lead in the future.

Sydney’s next captain: Dan Hannebery

West Coast:

In the next few weeks this article could be redundant with Luke Shuey rumoured to take over next year so he is the most likely to take over unless a huge switch happens.

West Coast next captain: Luke Shuey

Western Bulldogs:

Marcus Bontempelli
