WA’s Second Big Cox

Three seasons after the retirement of West Coast Ruckman Dean Cox another Cox is about to take WA by storm. Brennan Cox is about to start his second season at the Dockers and is getting set to become their number one forward. Drafted as a defender in the 2016 AFL national draft played mostly as a forward during his 10 games. Kicking only 4 goals struggled with his goal kicking early on another preseason should help fix some of the issues he has. Cox is known for his great set of hands and at only 193cm he can also play in the Ruck so he is one of Fremantle’s most well-rounded players.

Fremantle’s history of tall forwards has not been a good look with player like Chris Tarrant, Jack Anthony, Scott Gumblton all struggled when they crossed from other clubs. Joel Houghton, Adam Campbell did not make a impact with Houghton not playing a single game and Adam Campbell only managing 13 Games. Justin Longmuir made an impact but struggled with injuries. Lastly Robert Murphy just could not crack into the best 22 on a regular biases but with seven tall forwards on their list one of them should be a star and Cox only 1o games in stands out in front of the pack.

Cox was drafted out of Woodville West Torrens just like another Docker 353 games 700 goal superstar Matthew Pavlich both has similarities. Both are on the short side of the 190’s both can play forward and back. Pavlich made the 2002 All Australian at full back and Cox was a Under 18s All Australian as a defender. Both are/were known for their abilities to take good marks. And both have played in the Ruck from time to time. Comparing a 10 game 4 goals player to a 353 Games 700 Goals 6 time All Australian is a tough thing to do but there are good similarities to have.

Cox has signed on until 2020 so Fremantle have enough time to figure out what they want with him. Kicking 4 goals out of 10 games does not have a good look but Cox was able to score in all of his 10 games he played in 2017 so turning all points to goals would paint cox in a different light.

Could Brennan Cox be Fremantle’s missing link in their forward line that has been missing for some many years even when Pavlich played. Only time can tell but let’s hope for Fremantle’s sake that picking forwards out of WA are their good luck charm.
