Kelly's a Game Freo Will Only Lose

March 18th 2019

After Geelong’s Tim Kelly asked for a trade back home to Western Australia because of homesickness his manager Anthony van der Wielen made his point perfectly clear that Kelly was only going to one team and that was 2018 premiers the West Coast Eagles. Van der Wielen said “He is not going to Fremantle. I have had players there and I don’t think they are an attractive proposition for him”.  Making people question how homesick Kelly really was. Now the 2019 season is about to get underway and apparently Kelly is open to join Fremantle according to Marc McGowan but how much of this do we believe.?

None It is 0% true in my eyes they just offered Fremantle to play one-person Russian roulette. Last year once Kelly and his manager discarded all hope of him moving to Fremantle it gave Geelong the advantage when trying to get a deal done because they knew Fremantle was never an option with their pick 17 and 1st round 2019 pick a possibility to get Kelly. Now that Fremantle is “in with a shot” meaning it will give West Coast the fear of Fremantle getting him so they offer a better deal and Geelong has the fear that no matter what he is leaving. Unfortanly the only team to lose here is Fremantle.

Despite what I just said Fremantle as a club has to play this game, they have to ask the question about Tim Kelly because of the what if? Question what if he actually might come to Fremantle they don’t want to play it dumb and lose him. Even worse there will likely be names thrown in the air players like Ed Langdon and Luke Ryan are some name value players that might get out there for the deal to be done and just like Ryan Burton last year and Josh Caddy in 2016 the players end up leaving because they do not feel wanted. So, Fremantle could end up losing one of their best players and not get Kelly because he was never going to Fremantle to begin with. They are stuck playing a game they have to play but there is no way they are going to walk out the winner.

That’s not all through the Dockers are playing a smaller less harmful version of this game with Stephen Coniglio who realistically is only heading to Hawthorn or staying at GWS has shown 0 interest in his seven-year career that he wants to head home to Western Australia
