Is The Demon Gone?

April 12th 2018

Liam O'Grady

Has the Melbourne Football Club secretly dropped their Demon nick name or is it just me?

Ever since dropping their Demon looking logo in 2006/7 to their terrible jumper looking logo the next two logos after that have nothing to do with their Demons nick name.

It could just be me but I feel like I have not heard anyone at Melbourne or anyone in the AFL media refer to Melbourne as the Demons or the Dee’s in years even in pre-game coverage “Coming up its Melbourne V the Saints”. Most club go by their nicknames and with Greater Western Sydney Giants wanting to be known just as the GIANTS to appeal to Western Sydney and their home away from home Canberra, But Melbourne is Melbourne and are the oldest club in the world that is still going strong 160 years later.

Demons were not the clubs original nickname so a name change or a name drop wouldn’t be the first time for the former Redlegs (Name or the Norwood Football Club in the SANFL) and Fuchsias until 1933 but no team has gained or dropped a nickname since the Saints went from the Segues to the Saints in the 1950s. Fremantle had a complete overall at the end of the 2010 season where a name change was possible but the decided to keep the name.

Gold Coast Suns originally were going to enter the as the Gold Coast Football Club and naturally develop a nickname but that idea was scrapped a year later to the name the Suns. So a clubs have toyed with the idea of having no nickname and for Melbourne in a way it makes sense because they are Melbourne that is all you need to say about them they are Melbourne. Will they ever officially drop the Demons name? No for example their club slogan this year is #raisehell but I think for now their logo and they way the media and commentators talk about them they will just be Melbourne.
